DISCOVER BOIS-DU-LUC & THE HISTORIC CENTER CANAL
Discover two UNESCO World Heritage sites, just 3 km apart, and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Centre region's industrial era. These two remarkable sites are inextricably linked by their central role in the mining and transportation of coal, the cornerstone of the region's economic development.
Start your visit at the exceptional former mining site of Bois-du-Luc, which immerses you in the history of an exceptionally long-lived colliery. You'll learn about the miners' hard work, their daily lives and their leisure activities. As early as the 15th century, the challenge of transporting coal from extraction sites to consumption sites arose in our regions. The idea of creating waterways was born.
After discovering Bois-du-Luc, follow the coal route to the Canal du Centre Historique. Embark on an exceptional cruise where you can admire the old hydraulic elevators, true technological marvels.
You'll understand how they work by visiting an engine room from another era. You can also admire the Strépy-Thieu funicular elevator, the largest in Europe, where an interactive exhibition on the "Voies d'Eau" and a historical film will plunge you into the history of these infrastructures. Join us for an enriching and captivating adventure, and discover the historical and technological impact of these exceptional sites.
