In the company of our guide, follow in the footsteps of the miners. Every day, they descended into the bowels of the earth to extract the black gold, the coal that made Wallonia rich in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
From the entrance gate to the old colliery, you'll follow the miners' daily route from the lodge to the takings room, via the hanging room and the lamproom.
The surface installations, with their emblematic roller frames (or headframes), give an insight into the workings of the mine and its workers, and, above all, shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy of August 8, 1956, which claimed the lives of 262 men of 12 different nationalities.
The Espace 8 août 1956, also dedicated to Italian immigration, features an emotional film with testimonials from former miners and rescuers.
The tour continues with a visit to the rescue truck and the reconstruction of a post-war home for immigrant workers.
After discovering the Bois du Cazier, follow the coal road to theStrépy-Thieu elevator, where you can admire the funicular elevator, the largest in Europe, where an interactive exhibition on the "Voies d'Eau" and a historical film will plunge you into the history of these infrastructures. Join us for an enriching and captivating adventure, and discover the historical and technological impact of these exceptional sites.
