Discover century-old boat elevators!

Considered a pure masterpiece of Belgian civil engineering, the Canal du Centre historique and its four hydraulic elevators form one of the most remarkable examples of an industrial landscape from the last century. Initially designed to link the Meuse and Scheldt basins, thus facilitating the transit of goods from the north to the south of the country, the Canal du Centre historique is now devoted exclusively to river tourism.

Departing from the Strépy-Thieu funicular elevator, climb aboard one of our pleasure boats and let yourself be seduced by the bucolic charm of the Canal du Centre historique, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its hydraulic elevators, the only ones in the world still in their original state and powered solely by water!

What you're about to see

You'll pass through the Thieu lock, elevator no. 4 and various movable bridges, before heading for elevator no. 3, where you'll be given a tour of the machine room to discover the secrets behind the manufacture and operation of these century-old elevators! Finally, you'll board our little train to take you along the Canal du Centre historique and back to the foot of the funicular elevator.

The minimum number of participants for our weekday boat cruises is 20. If this number is not reached, our sales department will contact you to choose another slot. Thank you for your understanding.
